Once upon a time, a young girl started to daydream as she stirred a pot of simmering strawberry preserves. She dreamed about fields of ripe blueberries and sprigs of fresh mint. Joanne and Ron Schmidt turned their dreams into reality in 1994 when they founded Galloping Cows Fine Foods. Gourmandises Avenue Chocolaterie is owned and managed by Jean-Pierre Gallois and Yseult Bertic. Originally from France, Jean-Pierre and Yseult have over 25 years experience as professional Chocolatiers. Since opening in 2003, they have been creating fine chocolates and truffles using only high quality French chocolate couverture from their Eastern Passage production lab. No preservatives or artificial flavours are used and they incorporate such local Nova Scotian ingredients as ice wine, port wine, berries, sea salt, maple syrup, honey, apples, seaweed and more. Their specialties include Berry Chocolate Bark, Cremeux des Salins, Acadie Folie, Nova Scotia Ice Wine Truffles and Croquantine d’Annapolis.

Willy Krauch came to Canada from Denmark and began smoking fish in the tiny village of Tangier, Nova Scotia. Since 1956 they have been smoking the finest Atlantic salmon, mackerel and eels in their traditional Scandinavian style smokehouse.

Willy developed a method of smoking that’s uniquely his own.

Over the years Willy developed a reputation for selling only the finest quality smoked Atlantic fish. In fact, many people both locally and tourists make the 50 mile drive from Halifax, a day’s outing just to buy his fish.

Willy has passed on the fine craft of smoking fish to his sons. Like their father, they have learned to appreciate premium quality smoked fish. Our worker co-operative started in 1996 as Canada’s first certified Fair Trade coffee roaster.
