As the largest apple-packing company in Atlantic Canada, Scotian Gold Cooperative’s growers harvest more than 20 varieties of apples, including some of the world’s best Honeycrisp. In the fall of 2010, Scotian Gold will introduce two new varieties to Atlantic Canada: the SweeTango™, a cross between a Honeycrisp and Zestar, and the Sonya, whose parents are Gala and Golden Delicious. Since the early 1600′s, when the Acadians introduced the apple tree to North America, apples have been one of the original “tastes of Nova Scotia”. Each fall for over four hundred years, Nova Scotians have eagerly awaited the arrival of the apple harvest, which then caused a flurry of activity in kitchens throughout the province, as the crop was turned into delicious pies and preserves. In the early part of this century, a dedicated group of apple growers in the Annapolis Valley began a cooperative movement with the formation of the United Fruit Companies of Nova Scotia. In 1957 Scotian Gold Cooperative Limited was created as a result of a reorganization of United Fruit. Today Scotian Gold Cooperative is the recognized leader in the production of quality packed apples for the fresh market in the Maritimes. Scotian Gold Cooperative is the only producer owned apple cooperative in Nova Scotia handling fruit from approximately 50 growers representing more than 50% of the total Nova Scotia apple crop.

Inside each of our bags of apples, or within that juicy apple that graces a store’s bulk display, that longstanding, enduring, true “Taste of Nova Scotia” comes shining through. Always at the forefront of innovation, Scotian Gold led the charge with the introduction the Honeycrisp^™, which took the apple world by storm, because of the variety’s elusive combination of crispiness and juiciness.  With Honeycrisp parentage, SweeTango™ has the same juicy crispness as its parent and a sweet-tart flavour experience, sure to please the palate.  The new Sonya variety will deliver an entirely different taste experience, described as exceptionally sweet with no trace of acidity. Scotian Gold is also proud to introduce our fresh cut apple slice line including Apple Snack Packs and Sweet and Tart Apple Snacks to Go which elevate snacking to an entirely new, healthy, level.

This year, Scotian Gold is proud to be the official snack for Team Nova Scotia athletes in the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

SCOTIAN GOLD operates a modern Controlled Atmosphere storage and packing facility. With the most modern facilities ensuring top quality product, apples are packed and shipped throughout the year to local as well as export markets.

The company also operates an Agricultural and Retail division providing agricultural supplies, fertilizers and other crop inputs through its retail outlets in Coldbrook, Nova Scotia and to other dealers throughout the Atlantic Provinces. The two retail outlets include the “Scotian Gold Country Store” offering a full line of hardware, feed, pet supplies, and horticultural supplies and the “Scotian Gold Apple Market and Country Garden Centre” which is a seasonal market and garden centre which offers in season produce and over 30 flavours of ice cream as well as lawn and garden plants and supplies.
